Germany weather is mild and it does not normally have long periods of cold or heat. This is quite odd, since Germany is located at latitudes north of the United States-Canadian border and consequently closer to the Arctic Circle than to the equator.
Northwestern and coastal Germany have a maritime weather caused by warm westerly winds from the North Sea, which creates warm summers and moderate cloudy winters. Farther inland, Germany weather is continental, marked by greater diurnal and seasonal variations in temperature, with warmer summers and colder winters.
The Alpine regions in the south and some areas of the Central German Uplands have a mountain climate. Germany weather has lower temperatures due to the higher altitudes and more rainfall caused by air turning into moisture-laden as it rises over higher terrain.
The maritime weather is mainly affected by the Icelandic low-pressure system and the Azores high-pressure system. The Icelandic systems rotate in a counterclockwise direction and usually move to the east and southeast as they move towards Europe whereas the Azores systems move eastward and rotate in a clockwise direction. These air masses bring moisture-laden clouds which are forced by westerly winds.
The northern lowlands are sometimes between these air masses and are affected concurrently by both, usually during winter. During that time, the winds come from the west and are typically very strong. The Icelandic low system is the one that is usually dominant on its own.
During winter, these systems have high-pressure air masses which bring bright, clear and cold weather which lasts for approximately two weeks. Furthermore, in Germany weather, a phenomenon named föhn (warm wind), arises when the center of a low-pressure system moves away to the south and crosses Central Germany. During this, warm tropical air approaches the Alps and drops moisture on the southern slopes of the mountains. The air warms significantly as it compresses when it descents from the northern slope, and during spring, these winds dissolve the clouds and melt the snows.
The average temperature throughout the country is approximately 9° C. Temperature fluctuations between night and day or between summer and winter are significantly less in the north than in the south.
The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 1.6°C in the north and approximately -2°C in the south. On the contrary, during July, which is the warmest month, the weather is cooler in the north than in the south. Precipitation ranges between 600 mm and 800 mm per annually.
